We’re pleased to share the return of Brighton, UK based artist Phil Tomsett with his third physical album as The Inventors of Aircraft for Whitelabrecs, following 2020’s Velatore and 2022’s Edge of Imagination. Phil has released music on other labels including Fluid Audio, Home Normal, Time Released Sound and Wist Rec. In 2022 he produced soundtrack work at The Royal Astronomical Society for artist Linda Laird’s audio-visual installation ‘An Imperfect Account of a Comet’. He also records under his own name, and has collaborated with Aaron Martin and Ian Hawgood.

‘Waiting For Something To Break’ is a collection of deep and swirling ambient pieces, created using synthesisers, found sounds and sampled cello. Phil wanted to continue working with Wavetable Synthesis as he had done in his last album for Whitelabrecs ‘Edge Of Imagination’. However, the work that came about was different, with a more atmospheric and emotional sound emerging as his subconscious took over in the creative process.

Once the production of the album was complete, the concept became clearer; each of the tracks vary yet there is a mood running throughout them. Waiting For Something To Break is twelve unique sound environments, all set in one singular unifying landscape. For this album, we selected an image to match each track, with each one set at a different landscape or environment, starting with the cover artwork. These images were each processed with a duotone filter, so that the colours from the cover image run through the series and these will display inside Bandcamp and most audio players. For this album, we have launched a new format of CD packaging which is a printed wallet with a centre hole to showcase the custom-printed disc, reminiscent of old disco sleeves.
